The relationship between financial advisors, the firms that employ them, and their clients is shifting in ways that are upending the traditional order. There are many factors at play: New proposed regulations from the Department of Labor require advisors to assume a fiduciary role, clients have become more sophisticated thanks to the enormous amount of information available online and firms are under threat from new, more nimble, start-ups.
