Machine Learning Algorithm Series: Linear Regression

This post is the first in our series on machine learning (ML) algorithms. (See posts 2 and 3 on Logistic Regression and k-Nearest Neighbors.) In these posts, we explain the basic underlying concepts behind various algorithms, their pros and cons, and their most common applications. We are starting this discussion with the oldest ML algorithm, linear regression. It is an excellent starting point for learning about ML because many of the basic concepts involved are easy to explain in this context and because it is relatively easy to implement your very own linear regression algorithm. Case Study: How a Broadcast, Cable, and Digital Multimedia Company Unified Master Data Management

Challenge

The company was dealing with inefficient and redundant data management practices across traditionally siloed operational processes for their radio, broadcast and cable divisions. There were no standard definitions of common media domain subjects such as advertiser, agency, brand, product, etc. Their cross-division, cross-platform analytics were suffering from data inconsistencies and errors. There was little transparency into the increasingly manual and time-consuming processes necessary to compile regular reports and metrics. Independent efforts to remedy all of this were underway within business areas without centralized information technology support .
